This SPF 30 sunscreen is of really high quality. This physical sunscreen delivers broad-spectrum protection by using zinc oxide (19%) as its active ingredient. This is highly concentrated enough to give you the confidence that you will get a remarkable quality of protection.

This sunscreen is a good choice from the perspective of shifting to one of the safer sunscreen available – you will get the ease of using a spray and at the same time begin adjusting with the thickness of the mineral formulas as well as the rubbing it needs. This sunscreen has also been rated with 80-minute water resistance, giving you a lot of carefree and relaxed playtime before you will have to reapply.

Though EWG has given a rating of only 3 to this sunscreen, this is because the rating system considers the ingredients of the physical sunscreen to be harmful when inhaled from spraying.

Goddess Garden Kids Sport Spray SPF 30

This brand has been known for producing remarkable formulations of spray sunscreen and this SPF 30 is not exempted. It delivers physical, broad-spectrum by combining two active ingredients, 6.4% titanium dioxide and 6.0% zinc oxide. It’s a strong competitor of our first product, but it lands second since it uses much lower concentration of active ingredients.

Anyway, this sunscreen has been specially formulated to be a sports sunscreen. It features water resistance of up to 80 minutes, giving you a robust and dependable protection to endure even on your utmost active days during summer.

During your first application, you will notice that the spray will appear to be white and misty, making it very easy to make sure that you have covered all your exposed skin. After spraying it on, you will need to rub it a little bit to dissipate its white cast to a more convenient level.

Goddess Garden Everyday Spray SPF 30

Via Amazon.com

Here’s another sunscreen from Goddess Garden and this time, it is for everyone looking for a product that is slightly lighter and much more suitable for daily use. Unlike Goddess Garden Kids Sport Spray SPF 30 which offers 80-minute water resistance, it features water resistance of only up to 40 minutes; but I must say this is still an excellent choice for makeshift spray sunscreen too.

This SPF 30 sunscreen delivers physical, broad-spectrum protection by also using both 6.4% titanium dioxide and 6.0% zinc oxide; the same level of active ingredients used in the sports formula. It also sprays in thicker layer and needs rubbing to offset its effect.

However, it is not equally noticeable as with those heavier sports formula; so if you’re looking for a sunscreen for daily use rather than for high-intensity and extreme outdoor activities, this product is really an excellent choice.

  • It comes at an affordable price
  • thumbs-o-up
It is suitable for daily use

Kiss My Face Mineral Sun Spray SPF 30

Via Amazon.com

This is the latest sunscreen from this brand. Kiss My Face have recently changed its formula to add active ingredients that is all-mineral with the aim of cleaning up its product line.

However, there have been few unpleasant reviews about the lotion's texture, as the result of its change. I took a look at this and I found out that they appear to be coming from the users of the former chemical formulation. They weren’t expecting that the texture will change, but this is just normal when it comes to mineral sunscreen so you should not be bothered at all. Just take note that this is just a small part of switching to a much safer skincare.

Anyway, this SPF 30 sunscreen provides physical, broad-spectrum protection of high quality by using titanium dioxide (6%) and zinc oxide (6%). Though its bottle does not come in continuous spray, its formula is really thin making it easy to apply. It has also been rated to have 80-minute water resistance, making it an excellent daily sunscreen choice.

PROS

  • It comes in an improved all-mineral formula
  • thumbs-o-up
It is ideal for daily use

CONS

  • It contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in lower concentration

But if you just can’t handle 100% mineral sunscreen being the first stage of your switch to much healthier options, then just at least make sure you choose a chemical sunscreen which comes with safe EWG rating, it is much better.

This SPF 40 sunscreen receives a rating of 3 from EWG which is much better compared to most marketable spray sunscreens. It does not have oxybenzone content so even if I highly prefer physical sunscreens, this product’s formula is a remarkable choice if you are not yet prepared to say goodbye to those easy to use chemical formulas.

This sunscreen can give you high-quality protection and at the same time keep that familiar feel on your skin. It provides broad-spectrum protection by combining three active ingredients, octocrylene (2.75%), octisalate (5%) and avobenzone (3%). It has a water resistance of up to 80 minutes, plus it is not greasy at all. This means you can relax under the sun without worrying that your face has now that greasy, shiny look.

Is Spray Sunscreen Safe?

Well, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t decided yet, but the safety experts from the Consumer Reports are worried about its potential risks.

For instance, when you inhale the product, particles can go into your lungs the same way as second-hand smoke can cause cancer. You will be at risk of inhaling any of the ingredients like titanium dioxide which has been classified to be harmful or toxic when inhaled in large amount.

Allergy doctors, in particular, are worried about its impact on kids, especially those who are already suffering from asthma or allergies.

The Best Way To Apply Spray Sunscreen

If you someone who prefer to use spray sunscreens rather than lotions, well you are not alone. The popularity of spray sunscreens have been on the rise, in fact, its sales have been inching nearer to the top-selling lotions.

There's no doubt to that since people like how quick and easy to apply the spray sunscreens are, plus they tend to be lighter as well so you won't be feeling all matted down. But remember that the even the best sun protection will not be able to protect you if you are not using it properly.

Unfortunately, spray sunscreens are much trickier to use compared to lotions. Moreover, they present a health hazard to some users.

This is the reason why this particular skin care product have not been universally accepted by dermatologists. In fact, one survey says that only 69% of the 540 dermatologists surveyed say that they recommend spray sunscreens to their patients. So to make sure that you will be safe in the sun, consider these tips below before you hit that spritz.

Keep The Spray Away From The Face

Do not spray the product on your face to avoid inhaling potentially harmful ingredients. You can instead spray the sunscreen on your hands and begin rubbing the product on your face; make sure you avoid your mouth and eyes.

When spraying it on your body, hold the nozzle as close as possible to your skin, then spray it generously. It will take about one ouch of sunscreen so you could fully cover your body. However, it might be difficult to see how much you are applying when using a spray, there might be a possibility that you will use too little and miss some spots. So I suggest that you spray up until your skin glistens.

I also suggest that you only apply sprays when you are in a well-ventilated area.

Thoroughly Rub The Product

Even if the spray sunscreen has been labeled as "no-rub", I suggest you should still spread smoothly the product in your skin for at least 10 seconds so you will get an even layer of coverage or else, you will certainly miss some spots.

Do Not Use Sprays During Windy Days

During windy days, I’m afraid you are just protecting the air more rather than your skin. Strong winds can make it even harder to apply the spray sunscreen. There will also be a risk of accidentally inhaling the product. If you don’t have any other sunscreen with you, then just spray the sunscreen into your hands and then rub it on your body.

Avoid Open Flames When Using Spray Sunscreen

Spray sunscreens might burn you, literally. There have been incident reports from the FDA which people suffered from significant burns that call for medical treatment after wearing spray sunscreen near sources of flame like a grill. Take note that the spray sunscreens have alcohol content and this is apparently flammable.

Some spray sunscreens claim that it will already be safe to be around a flame once the product has been thoroughly rubbed in and dry, but you might want to disregard that. FDA advises that even if the skin is already feeling dry, the wearer of any flammable sunscreen should still avoid open flames or any other material that can throw sparks.

Don’t Use It With Kids

Though spray sunscreens are safe for the skin, it can be potentially harmful when it accidentally breathe in. As I already mentioned, some sunscreens contain ingredients that can be irritants to the lungs. Some sprays contain ingredients that have been linked to cancer when inhaled in large amounts.

And since children are more likely to wriggle when they are being sprayed, the spray will accidentally go toward their face and get inhaled. There are some who says to hold your breath when spraying sunscreens, but take note that very young kids are not good at holding their breath. If no other sunscreen is available, spray the product into your hands first and rub into your child’s skin.

Final Thought

I don’t highly recommend the use of spray sunscreens because of its health hazards to some users, but you are free to use one if you like; just make sure you stick to the ones with safe ingredients on it, like the ones I mentioned above. The most effective sunscreen is the one you will use most often.

Also, don’t forget to consider your skin type, if you have dry skin, a lotion may be your best bet. I have also written about the best sunscreen for dry skin, you can read it just in case you want to learn more.
