Someone just asked if she can use acrylic paint on her skin. She has been invited to a themed children’s party where guest where encourage to wear a face paint.

She asked me if she should go for it. Well, I’m afraid so since acrylic contains ingredients that can be toxic to our skin.

So this leads to the question, how can you use acrylic paint on skin?

Before we make an assumption on whether the acrylic paint is safe to be used for your skin, we need to understand what acrylic paint is and what its main contents are.

Acrylic paint is a water-based paint that can be used thinly and be cleaned with water. One of its greatest features is that it can mimic the quality of oil paints, but it has lower toxicity levels and minimal cleaning issues. It can also quickly dry compared to oil paints, this means you can work on it quickly.

Another thing that makes this paint ideal is that it is also very versatile that you can easily use it in creating styles and several effects. So it is safe to say that acrylic paints are just amazing, especially when we are using it for its purpose, which is painting it on the canvas. But the risk lies when you will be using it outside its purpose.

This is because acrylic paint contains ingredients that can be harmful to us humans, like:

Placing anything on your skin that contains toxic, the harsh chemical could lead to undesirable side effects like skin irritation, redness or worse, acne! Our face can really be sensitive that even shaving can sometimes cause acne.

But what if the acrylic paint comes with a label that says “non-toxic”? Well, this only means that its chemical content is at its minimum level and is not toxic when you are using it for acrylic painting purposes. But this does not mean that it is safe on your skin or there is no risk that comes with it. So I suggest that you completely avoid them.

However, there will always be times when there’s a need to apply acrylic paint on our skin. If there are moments that you can’t say no, then read these tips on how to safely use acrylic paint on your skin.

Safety Tips For Using Acrylic Paint On Your Skin

Make sure to test it out. Apply the paint to a small portion of your skin and observe for any adverse effect like skin irritation.

Only use the acrylic paint in an area that is well-ventilated. Formaldehyde is used as a preservative that prolongs acrylic paints' shelf life; however, it is known to be a carcinogen that can be harmful to our health. So make sure you only use acrylic paint in a well-ventilated area as the air can dry formaldehyde and reduce its potential side effects.

Don’t use acrylic paint close to your mouth and nose. The paint is very harmful to be ingested or inhaled, so make sure you don’t apply it near your mouth and nose.

Make sure to check the ingredients. I suggest you choose an acrylic paint that comes with less than 1% formaldehyde.

Only use clean sponges or brushes.

How To Efficiently Remove Acrylic Paint On Your Skin

Make sure not to leave acrylic paint on your skin for long period of hours. Well, fortunately, acrylic paint can be easily removed. Here are some tips how to quickly remove paint from your skin:

  • Place the painted area under warm water and wash it off using a mild soap. Once you have faded the paint on your skin, pat the area to dry.
  • Loosen the paint by running the painted area over warm water. Then use baby oil to rub any paint spots and completely remove it. Rise it again with warm water.
  • Put some alcohol on a cotton ball or a washcloth, then rub it in a circular motion to remove the paint. After you have completely remove the paint, use warm water and gentle soap to wash the area.
  • If there are still remaining paint, loosen it again by place the painted area under warm water. Then put some acetone on a washcloth and place it over the painted area. Wait for 30 seconds to one minute before rinsing it with mild soap and warm water.

Acrylic paint is a great and safe paint to be used when you are using it for its intended purpose, which is painting it on a canvas. But since it contains toxic ingredients that can be harmful to our body, I highly suggest you stay away from acrylic paint or any form of paint at all. Avoid using it on your skin to prevent any undesirable side effects.
